HER STORY










The Reverend D’Mrtri Crafton Burke


    The Reverend D’Mrtri Crafton Burke is a native of Daytona Beach and an itinerant elder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She currently serves as the South Annual Conference Assistant Coordinator of the AME Women in Ministry.

Pastor Dee, as she is affectionately known, has been sharing the message of Jesus Christ both here and abroad for 25 years. She will go anytime and anywhere to be an instrument of God’s healing and deliverance power!

You can find her preaching, teaching or singing as an associate pastor at Mount Hermon African Methodist Episcopal Church in Fort Lauderdale or ministering to patients and their families as a home hospice chaplain with VITAS Innovative Hospice Care in Fort Lauderdale. An AIDS advocate, she has developed or enhanced AIDS ministries and projects in Atlanta, Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale.

Reverend Burke accepted the call to ministry in 1987 at First AME-Las Vegas, Nevada where she served as an associate minister. Her first pastoral appointment as senior pastor was to organize First AME-Deltona. She has also served as an associate pastor at Allen Chapel AME- Daytona and Allen Temple AME-Atlanta. She was a trailblazer as the first female and/or person of color appointed at Central United Methodist-Ft. Myers, Harris Chapel United Methodist-Fort Lauderdale and Kirkman Road United Methodist-Orlando. Prior to joining VITAS she was chaplain/coordinator of the Faith-Based Dorm at Everglades Correctional Institution in Miami, a state medium-security male prison.

She completed her B.S. degree at Florida State University at the age of 19 and went on to complete her graduate studies at the University of Florida where she is the founder and first president of the Association of Black Communicators. In 2001 she earned the Master’s of Divinity degree at The ITC (Interdenominational Theological Center) in Atlanta.

Pastor Dee is married to the Reverend Walton Burke of Philadelphia and is the proud mother of 3 (Amorron, Amadeus and Amaris) and grandmother of 3 (Brodrick, Breana and Brandon, who died in 2011 in his sleep).

A servant-leader, Pastor Dee has held numerous local, state and national leadership positions empowering the lives of others. She gives God the glory for the great things God has done in her life!
